Welcome to Web 2.0 Tools PLC!
We are excited to have so many new PLC contributors! We had one meeting earlier this fall with PLC members who signed on at the beginning of the year; the information from that meeting is on our PLC wiki (URL below). Since our group has become so large, we are dividing into three smaller groups. Elementary Web 2.0 East, Elementary Web 2.0 West and Web 2.0 Secondary. Please visit the FCPS Librarians Blackboard wiki (Professional Development Tab) and sign your name under East or West so that we know your preference. (If you are a secondary librarian names your name has been moved under the Secondary heading). We are continuing our dialogues on line and through the occasional email. Web 2.0 Tools PLC Notes: After looking at the wealth of information on our Web 2.0 wiki and combining that info with the meeting we had, here are my thoughts: 1. There are some topics related Web 2.0 access at different schools that might be better served through email chains instead of our PLC wiki. Let’s discuss briefly during our next meeting. 2. Let’s focus on two goals for this year: -Educating interested librarians and interested staff at our school about Web 2.0 (discussed at our Nov. 3 meeting) and -Web 2.0 advocacy for instruction and collaboration – that is, what are the issues and how can we instill confidence about these Web 2.0 topics: access, safety, security, and what is plagiarism on Web2.0?

(Our first PLC meeting)
Our Web Tools PLC met from 8-9 a.m. on November 2nd, 2009 to discuss our purpose, concerns, questions, and observations pertaining to Web 2.0 tools.Cathy M., Bob H., Gianina F., Gretchen H., Ellen Mc., Adya M. and Susan W. were present at the meeting.
The following information is a synopsis of our major topics of discussion.
A.Purpose:To identify instructional bestpractices for Web 2.0 tools
1. To identify content strategies for providing professional development to interested librarians and teachers.
2. To identify solutions for Web 2.0 challenges.
B.Goals for meeting: 1.2 face to face meetings a year. Fall and Spring.One proposed meeting in the winter at the all county librarian’s meeting/working lunch? Breakfast?
2.Online collaboration:Post twice per quarter on the wiki, as edits to a document we are working on, or a comment on one of the discussion topics.
C.Discussions 1.Controversy ina nutshell:In discussing our mission, there was some concern expressed regarding the Fairfax restrictions on Web 2.0 tools and some of the security issues related to students use of these tools. On the flip side of this issue, we discussed the urgency in teaching students appropriate and inappropriate uses of the internet and specifically web 2.0 tools. We also discussed this as an opportunity to learn and share as much as possible about the tools so that we are a viable advocacy group for the use of Web 2.0 tools for the purpose of increasing student achievement in a wide range of subjects. 2.Resources for introducing librarians/teachers to Web 2.0 tools: 23 things, Doug Johnson, Blue Skunk Tools 3.Twitter Resources were discussed.Gianina is going to start a twitter account for webtoolsplc. 4.Importance of having some interaction with IT over some of the Web 2.0 issues:Bob is going to contact A. Mills in IT to start the dialogue. 5.We’ll post to the Librarians 24/7 website. Gretchen will craft a quick and easy Web 2.0 definition and Ellen will put together an invite to do one or more of the Web 2.0 instructional sites (i.e., 23 things). 6.Adya will contact TJ to identify their controls on google docs or other Web 2.0 tools. 7.We need to start putting together a “value added” document which will illustrate (through lesson plans, other?) the importance of these tools for driving student achievement. 8.We are putting together a table to identify various Web 2.0 tools, what they are and what you can do with them.This might also go on the Librarian’s 24/7 website.
Follow-up:
Ellen spoke with Lis about posting on the Librarian’s 24/7 website and she said she would make a tab for Web 2.0.Wesend the info we agree is ready for posting to Lis and she will post it.
